THE SYMPOSIUM Takaro Park, Oamaru's central greenspace is the venue for the month long national stone carving symposium. Renowned and emerging sculptors will be on the park daily creating works of art out of limestone fromweston's Parkside quarry. While some sculptors will spend the entire month working on a two tonne block of stone, others have opted to cut their blocks in half and create two pieces. During the symposium, the public are free to wander at will. meet with the sculptors, discuss commissions, and watch art in progress. A truely unique event! This is the second symposium held on Takaro Park. The first in 1998, was organised by Whitestone Community Arts Council and rated a huge success by sculptors, visitors and the local community. Support in the district is such that plans are in place to ensure one will be held every two years. |
